One of the reasons we went to India, and Delhi in specific, is dat we wanted to see the Taj Mahal. And I can proudly say that I can check that one of my bucket list.
If you’re doing a round trip through India, you can go see the Taj Mahal when you’re in Agra. Or when you’re doing a Golden Circle tour (Delhi – Agra – Jaipur) and you’re already in Agra. We however only had 3 days in Delhi. So we wanted to make a day trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.
From Delhi to Agra
There are several ways to travel from Delhi to Agra. One is per train. And another is by car. We didn’t have a lot of time to spare, so going by train and staying overnight in Agra wasn’t an option for us. So we chose to go by car. It is about a 3,5 hour car ride. But totally worth it!
Doing some research while planning this trip, I found out that being at the Taj Mahal at sunrise is really amazing. Seeing the sunrise and the red sky behind the Taj Mahal. I knew that I wanted to see that.
Booking the tour
So I found a tour company that offers the Taj Mahal sunrise day tour, from Delhi to Agra. You have to get up in the middle of the night, because you leave from your hotel between 02.00 am en 03.00 am.
Make sure when you’re going to book a day trip to the Taj Mahal, that you really check the reviews. Because when I was planning it, I read a lot of reviews of people who did a sunrise tour. Some people had a driver that was too tired to drive, eyes closing while driving. Also some people felt the need to talk to the driver the whole ride, just to make sure he didn’t fell asleep. And that’s not something you want of course.
Tour company
We booked the 1-Day Taj Mahal Sunrise Tour from Delhi with Golden Triangle Tours of India. We were picked up from our hotel at 3 a.m. and arrived in Agra at the Taj Mahal in time for the sunrise at 06.15 a.m.
Even though sleep is not overrated, I was really happy we decided to skip our good nights rest to witness this. Is was beautiful to see. And also an advantage of getting there really early, is that it’s less crowded than between 9-11am, when most people arrive at the Taj Mahal.
Our guide had a lot of knowledge and gave us information about the Taj Mahal and all it’s history. Did you know that the Taj Mahal looks exactly the same from every side you’re standing on?
Besides the Taj Mahal, we also went to Agra Fort and to the so called ‘Baby Taj’. Which was also very nice to see. So all and all, it was a great day!
